Ratan Tata was born on 28 December 1937 in Bombay now Mumbai he is an Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and former chairman of Tata Sons. He is the son of Naval Tata, who was adopted by Ratanji Tata, son of Jamsetji Tata(founder of Tata Group). Till the 8th class, he studied at the Campion School, Mumbai. After which, he studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, and the Riverdale. In 1959 he graduated from the Cornell University College of Architecture with a bachelor’s degree in architecture after his bachelor he completed his Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in Massachusetts USA in 1975.

Family

Ratan’s father is Naval Hormusji Tata who is the deputy chairman of Tata Sons. He passed away on 5 May 1989 due to cancer in Mumbai.

His mother’s name is Sooni Commissariat. Ratan’s parents got divorced in 1948 when he was 10 years old. After the divorce, Ratan and Jimmy were raised by the grandmother Navajbai Tata.

Career

After completing his studies in the USA in 1962, he started working at the Tata Steel plant in Jamshedpur as a blast furnace manager and the he worked at Tata Iron and Steel Company (Tisco).

In 1969, he went to Australia as a resident representative of the Tata group but in 1970 he came back to India and joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Thereafter, he worked as an assistance in Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Tata Motors).

In 1971, Ratan worked in the National Radio & Electronics Company Ltd, now NELCO. Ratan made various changes in the working policies through which profits rose between 1972 and 1975. However, the company faced huge losses in 1975 after the Prime Minister imposed a national emergency.

In 1977, Ratan was sent as a director to Empress Mill to help the mill cover its losses however, the mill was later shut down after the seniors rejected Ratan’s policies.

From 1986 to 1989, he served as the chairman of Air India.

In 1991, at the time of liberalization in India Ratan Tata was appointed as chairman of the Tata Group but many senior officials raised questions about his appointment Ratan’s appointment, their freedom was reduced as the officials were not required to report to him. Under his leadership, overlapping operations between subsidiaries were streamlined into company-wide operations, with the group exiting unrelated businesses to take on globalization.

In 1998, Tata Motors produced India’s first indigenous car Tata Indica under his leadership.

Tata acquired numerous companies including Tata Tea acquired TetleyTata Motors acquired Jaguar Land Rover, in March 2008 and Tata Steel acquired Corus.

In 2007, Tata entered into the aerospace and defense sector and established Tata Advanced System Limited(TASL).

In 2008, Tata launched India’s most affordable car, Tata Nano but due to several reasons, the production of Nano was discontinued.

In 2011, he introduced new policies according to which the age of retirement of a non-executive director was deducted from 75 to 70 years.

In December 2012, Ratan stepped down as the chairman of the Tata Group, and Cyrus Mistry was appointed as the new chairman.

Ratan has invested in many companies like Paytm, Urban Company, Ola, Lenskart, and Snapdeal.

Awards/Achievements

In 2001, Ratan Tata was awarded, the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.

 In 2008, Ratan Tata was honored with Padma Vibhushan, (the third and second highest civilian honors awarded by the Government of India).

Ratan Tata has also received many state civilian honors like ‘Maharashtra Bhushan‘ in 2006 for his huge work in the public administration in Maharashtra and ‘Assam Baibhav‘ in 2021 for his exceptional contribution towards furthering cancer care in Assam.

According to the  IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2021, Ratan Tata was ranked as the 421st richest person in India. His net worth was Rs. 3,500 crores in 2023.

Ratan Tata donates more than 65% of the profits earned by the Tata Group. Ratan worked with governments of many countries and Indian states in the field of providing employment, education, energy, and more.

Tata has never married. when Ratan studied in the USA he met a woman in Los Angeles with whom he fell in love but due to some reasons, the girl’s family did not agree.
